Kuwait 'should change employment laws to favour national workers'
Major changes to Kuwait's employment laws could be possible after a report by a parliamentary research committee said changes to legislation were needed.

It stated that unemployment among Kuwait's population now stands at 5.9 per cent and that employment law changes affecting the country's public sector could see jobs filled with national citizens rather than expatriate workers.

As many as 60,000 foreign workers employed in Kuwait's public sector could be replaced if the proposed law change is passed, reports the Kuwait Times.

The report stated that current employment laws have "harmed national manpower by creating an illusory parallel market of employing [Kuwaiti] citizens in the private sector only for the purpose of benefiting from the social and other allowances."

Earlier this week, the Kuwaiti government approved a $104 billion budget to spend on various infrastructure investments over the course of the next four years.

Planned projects include a new business hub in Silk City, as well as further spending on the health and education sectors, reports AFP.
