Height of competetionNakheel's kilometre-tall tower to anchor world's first inner city harbour

Master developer Nakheel has revealed another world first with the announcement of a unique inner city harbour community in the heart of new Dubai. Inspired by Islamic design and geometry, Nakheel Harbour & Tower development will have, as its central focus, a one-kilometre-high tower, as well as the world's only inner city harbour.

The development will cover an area of more than 270 hectares and become home to more than 55,000 people, in addition to offering a commercial section for up to 45,000 people, and
aiming to become another of Dubai's major tourist attractions. Sharing the plans at a VIP event yesterday, HE Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World, said: "There is nothing like it in Dubai. Nakheel Harbour & Tower is located in the heart of 'New Dubai', where we have focused on creating a true community, a location for living, working, relaxing and entertaining, for art and culture. All of this is concentrated in one area." The development will incorporate elements from great Islamic cities of the past including the famed Alhambra gardens of Spain, Egypt's Alexandria harbour, Tangier's renowned seafront promenade and the elegant bridges of Isfahan in Iran.

Commenting on the design, the Dubai World chairman, added: "With Islamic influences governing its design, Nakheel Tower has been able to reach its height of more than a kilometre. This inspired approach has enabled us to achieve a number of amazing feats of engineering, for example, the tower will be the world's tallest concrete structure." Nakheel Tower will feature four individual towers within a single structure with a distinctive crescent-shaped podium encircling the base to complement the height of the building.

"Nakheel has sought inspiration not just from Islamic design but also from the principles of inclusion, innovation, diversity, excellence, growth and progress. These are the same principles that have motivated and guided Islamic culture and helped create its great cities throughout history. Now they are shaping the cities of the future," he explained.
The multibillion dollar development will include 250,000 square metres of hospitality facilities, 100,000 square metres of retail options, and extensive green spaces including canal walks, parks and landscaping. The new development is geographically central within the emirate, located at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road and the Arabian Canal.

Its environmentally-friendly master plan will minimise car usage and maximise train, bus and water transportation through a transportation hub designed to blend into the harbour area along
with metro transportation and a unique water transport interchange. "The inspiration for the project came from Sheikh Mohammed's vision for building for tomorrow. He is famously quoted as saying that 'before evaluating the future, we have to take a quick look at the past. For it is the foundation of tomorrow'. "It sends another message to the world that Dubai has a vision like no other place on earth," he concluded.
